STATEMENT

"I am a ceramic artist based in Regina Saskatchewan where I am currently completing a post baccalaureate program in visual arts at the University of Regina. I have been interested in wheel-throwing vessels and firing them in atmospheric kilns, particularly wood and soda firings.

The work I have submitted for the Friend Portal, a wood fired bucket, has initiated a new direction in my work. It was fired in spring 2025 in our campus wood kiln. At the time of its making I wasn’t sure what it meant for my practice or what I could expect to learn from firing it. After opening the kiln and seeing it, I was struck by its surface. While I had been intending to replicate a metal bucket formally I hadn’t expected quite what association could be drawn from the firing. The accumulation of ash on the bucket, and the trace of flames, resulted in a work that seems to have aged centuries. This moment has been so important in the direction of my subsequent work that is fully informed by trying to replicate aged/abandoned utilitarian metal objects in clay."
