2nd Ave Public Art Unveil

On August 19, 2026, students from the University of the Fraser Valley’s School of Creative Arts (SoCA) brought a new layer of art and colour to 2nd Avenue in Downtown Mission.
 

Led by Chris Friesen, local artist and UFV professor, and created in partnership with the City of Mission, the project invited students to transform everyday public spaces into places for art, interaction and discovery.
 

The series extends across 2nd Avenue through a collection of site-specific interventions, from ornamented stairways and a newly transformed picnic table to stencilled sidewalk artwork and a large-scale mural.
 

Together, these works turn familiar pieces of the streetscape into unexpected creative moments, bringing student work beyond the studio and directly into the community.
